Federal Aid Programs For North Dakota Disaster Recovery

Following is a summary of key federal disaster aid programs that can be made available as needed and warranted under President Obama s major disaster declaration issued for the State of North Dakota:

President Declares Major disaster For South Dakota
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (fema) today announced that federal disaster aid has been made available to the State of South Dakota to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area struck by a severe winter storm on April 2, 2010.

Spring Ahead To Prepare For disasters
SEATTLE, Wash. — Daylight Savings Time in the United States starts on the second Sunday in March of each year and the Federal Emergency Management Agency encourages all Americans to use the change to daylight savings time to update emergency preparedness plans. For years, firefighters and safety professionals at every level have asked the public to change smoke alarm batteries throughout their homes, as they move their clocks ahead. According to fema Acting Regional Administrator Dennis Hunsinger, the March ritual of making homes safer from fire is also a great opportunity to review disaster response plans and restock disaster kits.

Applicant Briefings Scheduled For Several Maryland Counties

REISTERSTOWN, Md. — The Maryland Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (fema) announced they will hold Public Assistance Applicant Briefings in the Counties of Caroline, Carroll, Calvert, Cecil, Charles, Frederick, Kent, Queen Anne s, St. Mary s, and Talbot. Earlier briefings were held in Alleghany, Garrett and Washington Counties. The meetings are to help local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations affected by the February 5-11, 2010, severe winter storms and snowstorms.

fema Revises Preferred Risk Policies For Homeowners
The Federal Emergency Management Agency today announced that it is revising its Preferred Risk Policy under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) to extend eligibility an additional year. Effective January 1, owners of buildings found to be in a Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) during a flood map revision, may be eligible for a preferred risk policy that will allow them to maintain a lower cost flood insurance policy for two years following the effective date of a flood map change. A SFHA is a high risk flood area, meaning that there is a one-percent annual chance of flooding.
