Homeland Security Threat Level: YELLOW (ELEVATED) Significant National Weather South An area of low pressure over the Gulf of Mexico will move eastward across the Florida peninsula today, producing heavy rain and thunderstorms through central portions of the state. A few thunderstorms could turn severe over the southern portion of the peninsula. This system is forecast to move north along the Southeast coast, producing light rain and thunderstorms from Georgia to North Carolina. A Freeze Warning is in effect for portions of Texas and Oklahoma through this morning. Midwest A cold front will produce rain and snow over portions of the Upper Midwest and northern Plains. Snow accumulations of one to three inches are possible across North Dakota, eastern South Dakota, western Minnesota and northwest Iowa through this evening.Northeast Light rain is expected today in central New York, central Pennsylvania, northern Virginia and Washington, DC.West Dry conditions and mild temperatures are forecast over much of the West today. Gusty offshore winds and low humidity are producing critical fire conditions across portions of southern California, west of the Costal Range. Over the six hours previous to this report Typhoon Nida underwent a period of rapid intensification, with increased definition in the eye. Maximum sustained winds are 144 mph, with gusts to 172 mph, and continued intensification is expected over the next 24 hours. Typhoon Nida is no longer considered a danger to U.S. interests, and NWS is no longer issuing advisories on this system.
